What is DUP?
Dances of Universal Peace (DUP)
A peace ceremony of singing and dancing together in a circle.
Through music and dance (a form of moving meditation), we receive wisdom from diverse traditions of the world, open our hearts, cultivate a planetary consciousness, and create community.
It is a universal spiritual practice open to everyone—a prayer circle that helps us remember the oneness of all life (Toward the One).
Since 1968, DUP has been practiced in more than 50 countries, and in the winter of 2023, it took root in Japan as well. In recent years, this peace movement has been spreading even further, especially within global ecovillages.

From ancient times, sacred movement, song, and story have brought people together—at seasonal ceremonies and celebrations, as part of daily life and life passages, and in times of renewal and meditation. The Dances of Universal Peace are part of this timeless tradition of sacred dance.
Created by Samuel L. Lewis (Murshid SAM), a Sufi teacher and Zen master, the Dances are considered his crowning life achievement. They draw upon sacred phrases, scriptures, music, and movements from the world’s spiritual traditions.
The Dances are a transformative spiritual practice, awakening embodied unity, presence, and compassion, and allowing us to touch the spiritual essence within ourselves.
Offered in an atmosphere of safety, trust, and mindfulness, the Dances evoke a unified experience of movement, sound, breath, and sacred phrase.

Misako Nakajuma
Based in Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture, and Kokubunji City, Tokyo, she organizes DUP circles.
Currently living in Isumi, Chiba; born and raised in Tokyo.
During a break from university, she traveled around the world, which sparked her interest in farming-based and nature-connected ways of living. After working for a year and a half at a foreign-affiliated consulting firm, she became a trainee at the Permaculture and Peace Dojo to pursue a lifestyle in harmony with nature’s cycles, later joining its management team. Her main activities focus on living in tune with nature and sharing those practices with others.

Tour Planning / Musician
DUP Leader in Training
Chiyo Hiraoka
Based in Hadano, Kanagawa Prefecture, she leads the DUP “Inorinone Circle.”
From a young age, she aspired to be a singer-songwriter, eventually achieving her dream of making a major debut. However, as she continued to pursue pure and authentic music, she chose the path of independence.
While performing with her husband, Shun Kodama, as the musical duo Kodama to Chiyo, she was invited to compose the music for the permaculture film "TERRA-Green Planet-." This led her to encounter the Dances of Universal Peace, and she now finds deep healing in this primal, elemental approach to music.
In a traditional countryside house surrounded by the rich nature of Hadano, she runs Manaiho, a sound-bath yoga studio that blends the power of music and yoga.

Tour Plannning / Musician
DUP Leader in Training
Kotaro Tsuchiya
Based in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, he co-hosts a DUP circle with Kaori Tsuchiya.
In 2024, during a DUP gathering at the Peace Dojo, he was healed and reconnected with himself through the power of prayer, music, and human connection.
Now, with guitar in hand, he plays music for the Dances of Peace together with his wife, Kaori.
He hopes to share the healing and joy that this music brings, and to help expand the circle of peace.

Kaori Tsuchiya
Based in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, she organizes a DUP circle.
In high school, she encountered Butoh dance and, becoming aware of how education can control the body, chose to stop attending school and pursue the path of physical expression. After studying Butoh, she was captivated by African dance and traveled to Senegal.
For over 20 years since, she has been learning and sharing dance that conveys the vitality of life.
While raising three children, she encountered NVC, permaculture, and the Dances of Universal Peace, and continues to put into practice a hopeful vision of the world.

Musician
Shun Kodama

A spatial artist who plays a wide range of stringed instruments — from acoustic guitar and resonator guitar to the kamelen n’goni (African harp) — exploring every vibration of the strings, from traditional folk music to experimental sounds that make full use of effects.
Their original soundscapes, which evoke vivid inner landscapes, resonate in harmony with the atmosphere of each place they perform.
As part of the musical duo "Kodama to Chiyo" with Chiyo Hiraoka, they host the DUP “Inorinone Circle” based in Hadano.

For the Yatsugatake NEO Jomon Festival 2025, she is introducing the Dance of Universal Peace as part of the program, with the vision of expanding circles of peace and prayer in Yatsugatake.
Through spring, summer, and autumn, she tills the land and celebrates in festivals; in winter, she journeys to India, returning to the Source.
